Environmental Investigations at Multiple Coca-Cola Facilities

Montross, Virginia / Sanford, North Carolina / Dunedin, Florida

BANC3 was contracted by the Coca-Cola Company to perform engineering services at three of their facilities. The facilities included: The Northern Neck Coca-Cola Bottling Plant in Montross, Virginia; The Sanford Coca-Cola Bottling Plant in Sanford, North Carolina; and The Coca-Cola Bottling Plant in Dunedin, Florida.

After Phase I & Phase II Investigations were performed at the North Carolina site, it was determined that a Phase III Site Remediation was needed. Due to a release of hydraulic oil from a trash compactor dumpster an area of impacted soil needed to be remediated. All soil contamination resulting from the oil spills that exceeded North Carolina regulatory levels were remediated. After these efforts, a "No Further Action" letter from the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources was obtained.

After performing a Phase I Assessment at the Virginia Site, a Phase II Site Investigation was required after the identification of potential asbestos containing material in the boiler room of the warehouse building and due to the lack of records regarding the removal of three underground storage tanks outside the facility. Based on soil samples collected during the site investigation from the areas of the three former USTs, no further assessment was warranted. Based on the presence of asbestos in the pipe insulation and mudded pipe elbow/joint insulation in the boiler room, BANC3 recommended proper removal of the identified ACM prior to conducting any activities which may disturb the ACM.

At the Florida Site, our Phase I Investigation lead us to recommend that there was no evidence of environmental conditions that would require a more intrusive investigation.
